Hitchcock Heritage

City of Hitchcock

History of Hitchcock

The area now known as the City of Hitchcock was first settled around 1846. On May 31, 1848, Jonas Butler acquired land along Highland Bayou, where he built a home, part of which remained standing into the 1940s. Soon after, French settlers established homes in the area.

Originally named Highland due to its elevated position along the bayou, the community served as a travel route to Galveston until the 1870s, when the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway expanded through the settlement.

Around 1873, the town was renamed when Emily Hitchcock, widow of Galveston civic leader Lent A.M. Hitchcock, donated a 450-foot-wide tract of land for a townsite. In return, the railroad agreed to name the community in honor of her husband.

After 1920, the decline of local farming led to economic downturn. Packing houses closed, and many residents relocated to nearby Texas City for employment. By 1925, the population dropped to around 350.

The situation worsened during the 1930s due to insect infestations that devastated agriculture, leaving the community economically strained.
